Jenu Nudi Kannada-English Dictionary
The Jenu Nudi Dictionary is a language resource for the Jenukuruba Community that gives English approximations for Jenu-Nudi lexicons written in Kannada script. They will enable children from the community to grasp English much better and encourage them to use their ‘home language’ officially, without fearing criticism from those outside the community.The dictionary has been published with a vision to make the education system more sensitive to linguistic differences between students from the marginalized communities and others. Our colleagues Vinodh Prem Dhas and M. Dhivya visited our archive at H.D Kote for a week to give the field staff and other colleagues working closely with us hands on training in handling audio and video equipments, still camera, transferring of data to computer, web browsing, uses of YouTube, Picasa and photo editing. Time ticks for 10 tongues
There are at least 10 endangered languages in Karnataka with many more unrecorded tongues hurtling towards oblivion. This is the finding of a language survey, which says the number of endangered tribal tongues is only growing. The nationwide survey conducted by the People’s Linguistic Survey of India (PLSI) has identified the 10 in the red in Karnataka as Koraga, Irula, Soliga, Badaga, Yerava, Gouli, Bettakuruba, Jenukuruba, Siddi and Hakki Pikki.
